The song tells a story from Coles perspective which is unique as throughout the album most of the songs are not from the idols perspective himself. Neighbors recites the story of Cole and the social injustice he faces due to him being of a mixed race and how the rise to fame should have somewhat gained him respect and equality from the ‘white man’ but instead it has done quite the opposite. The past few days I have been listening to this album on repeat and one song seems to ingrain its lyrics into my head, Neighbors. Jermaine Lamarr Cole, one of the most influential and intellectual rappers of the new-school era has recently dropped his fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only exactly two years after releasing his award-winning album Forest Hills Drive.Ĭole, often seen as a modern day Nas without the illmatic keeps a relatively low profile for one of the biggest names in Hip Hop and raps about subjects such as social issues, becoming a father, his childhood as well as those generic bangers guaranteed to make everyone’s head nod.Īs well as his four albums to date he has released countless mixtapes since his rise to fame back early 2007 following the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Upwhich included classics such as Simba and Dollar and a Dream.īeing an avid J Cole fan, I couldn’t wait to listen to his new album seeing as two years is much too long to wait for new music from this lyrical genius.
